5 Ways for Families to Celebrate The Assumption

Celebrating family life

The Assumption of Our Lady into Heaven. What’s tomorrow’s feast day all about?

Mary was taken up or “assumed” into Heaven, body and soul. Her “yes” to God’s plan for her life inspires us and her assumption keeps us hopeful about our own resurrection. We can ask her to pray for us … and with us …. to God whenever we want. We are so blessed to have her as our prayer companion in Heaven!

So how can you and your family celebrate Mary’s life on earth and eternal life in heaven? I use the word celebrate here on purpose!

  1. Let Mary know you’re thinking of her all day by praying the Hail Mary at several points throughout the day … sometimes quietly to yourself and other times out loud with your family. It takes less than 15 seconds. This video can help lead your prayer.

  2. Leave a flower, card or prayer intention at a statue of Mary

  3. Attend Mass with your family

  4. Visit your church with your younger children and ask them to find all the paintings, stained glass images and statues of Mary they can find. When they find one, pray a Hail Mary together.

  5. Gather your family after dinner. Ask young children to draw a picture of Mary and Jesus in Heaven while the rest of the family prays the Rosary aloud together. The Glorious Mysteries include the story of The Assumption.

How will you and your family celebrate this feast day tomorrow? Will it be a special day? Share your ideas with other families here!
