What wisdom does Mary, the mother of Jesus, have to offer us during this season of Advent?
Who is Mary? Sorrowful, silent, an immobile sculpture? Or an ordinary person of faith, struggling with the daily demands of her life and the prophetic call. Luke in today’s Gospel, portrays the fullness of Mary's humanity as an example of faith for us.
Other prophets described in the bible objected to God’s commission by presenting their inadequacies. The prophets were not chosen because they were ready to be chosen, but because God wanted them. So, God reassured them of His divine presence in carrying out their call. The same pattern is seen in the call of Mary to be the Mother of Jesus.
We need Mary’s prophetic wisdom during Advent: “Be it done according to your word.” We too are being called by God. At times, we may resist and justify it with a long list of our inadequacies but we must remember the promising words of the angel to Mary, “Nothing is impossible with God.” We must not forget the reassurance of God’s promised presence.
Let us look toward Mary, our Mother, as how to live our own prophetic call.
