Being In The Presence Of God - Family Reflection Video

Learn more about our faith

If I were to ask you: who are you more like: Martha or Mary? Some of us could say, it depends on the situation. The two sisters in today’s gospel remind us of the need to consider the choices we make every day...

Some of us have very structured schedules at work, school, and home and others have a lot more flexibility, if we’re the ones who can set our own schedules. But, each one of us, no matter which category, has the ability to make time for prayer and reflection to give us perspective; first on how God is calling us to live.

In today’s 1st reading, we hear about Jonah bringing God’s message of warning to the Ninevites. Despite their serious sinfulness, both the great and small listened and turned away from sin. It’s a reminder that God is seeking the best for us, sending us warnings and encouragements no matter how far we may have drifted.

I think that most of us have both Martha and Mary like tendencies within us. Some of us are more like one than the other but - the point is that when given the opportunity to be in the Presence of Jesus whether like Martha and Mary or like us at Mass, Adoration, or prayer…our attention needs to be on God - listening to what He is calling us to do or not do.

Sure there are works like praying, singing, and assisting the priest, such as lector or server, but these and other works are meant to unite us to God in love.

Jesus doesn’t want our lives whether at Mass, home, school, or work to become so frenetic that we become anxious or worried - instead by this gospel teaching we’re called to see that though we must work in different ways each day - that it is by drawing close to God that we find both the vocation or work and how we’re to go about it.

My brothers and sisters, through making time to know and be with God, through prayer with our families, the Mass, Eucharistic Adoration, and the Word of God, we can not only find what really matters in our lives but also the peace of knowing that we are doing the will of God in whatever our day brings.

May God bless you and your families this holy day!
