Being Vigilant and Regaining Our Balance with Jesus - Family Reflection Video

Why pray?  |  Love thy Neighbor

Today’s readings caused me to think about being vigilant in our faith life and at times regaining our spiritual balance. They also brought me back to last week when my Mom and I were walking our dog and came upon a neighbor who lost her balance and suddenly hopped out of her sandals. I offered to help and as she steadied herself using my arm as a support, our dog, Erin, gave a warning bark.

In today’s first reading, St. Paul also sounds a warning to the people of Corinth and each of us. He’s been warning us this week that whether in the animal or human world - things aren’t always what they seem to be. For instance, the super-apostles who are trying to sway the people away from Paul’s authentic teaching of the gospel.

Specifically, Paul reminds them and us that our main focus should be on our relationship with God.

As I thought about this, it made me wonder, what are some of the things and people who knowingly or unknowingly distract us from God?

As I was thinking about this, my cell phone dinged…it was another text alert from a group of childhood friends asking me if I wanted to go golfing on the fourth of July. Now, I don’t even golf, but because I was part of a large group text my phone was going off every 10 minutes and I found myself constantly looking to see who was going and their other comments - it definitely was a distraction.

What are some ways that you or your family are being distracted…even by good things like golfing with friends? It’s good to take a look at this because when enough distractions hit us, we can start to lose our spiritual balance and our focus on God’s plan.

St. Paul’s words connect well with today’s gospel. St. Paul encourages, we - the church, to remain firm within the essentials of the gospel and to make them a priority. The gospel leads us to reflect on what we value most…what we treasure.

Again this is something to think and pray about individually and just as importantly with your family. For example, would you skip Mass on Sunday to go to a concert or ball game? It’s good to think about...there are lots of things that we do with family and friends that are wonderful - but like Paul - Jesus reminds us to not let them draw us away from God’s love and the peace and joy that being close to Him brings.

Going back to my story, last week, Erin, our dog, misread the situation and thought our neighbor was going to harm me. Fortunately, Erin’s a quick learner and came over and kissed the woman’s hand.

St. Paul and the gospel are true warnings to each of us and our families…to remain focused on God and remain vigilant - so that if we lose our balance, we may turn to Jesus, who’s here to steady us and help us follow Him along the way.

May God bless you and your family this holy day!
