Come Down - Weekly Homily Video
Today, we turn to the story in John 4, where Jesus encounters a desperate nobleman. This man's world is crumbling–his son lies deathly ill at Capernaum while Jesus remains in Cana. The nobleman pleads, "Sir, come down before my son dies!" These words, "come down," become a powerful refrain in this story.
This royal official was a man of high standing at the court of Herod. He came to Jesus, who had the low status of a village carpenter. Further, Jesus was then in Cana, and this royal official lived in Capernaum, almost twenty miles away.
Physical Healing
On the surface, the nobleman seems to be making a practical request. He wants Jesus to physically travel to his son's side and perform a healing. But let's delve deeper. This plea also reveals a limited understanding of Jesus' power. The nobleman clings to the idea of Jesus needing to be physically present to heal.
Jesus responds in a surprising way. He doesn't rush to Capernaum. Instead, He says, "Go, your son will live." Jesus heals the son from a distance, demonstrating that His power transcends physical location.
True Healing
Now, this doesn't mean Jesus never performs physical healings. He does! But the point here is that true healing goes beyond the physical. It's about a deeper connection, a faith that transcends sight and touch.
How often do we pray for a "come down" moment from God? We plead for specific interventions for God to physically change our circumstances. But perhaps, like the nobleman, our faith is limited. Perhaps true healing lies in a different kind of "coming down."
Maybe it's God coming down to meet us in the midst of our struggles, offering strength and solace even when our circumstances don't change. Maybe it's about us "coming down" from our anxieties and surrendering to His will. When we truly believe in His power, we can find peace even in the face of uncertainty.
The nobleman's faith isn't perfect. He needs reassurance, asking, "When did my son begin to get better?" But ultimately, he believes. He recognizes Jesus' authority and the miraculous nature of the healing. His faith deepens, moving beyond a simple desire for a physical presence and cure.
Let us learn from this story and expand our understanding of healing. May we seek a deeper connection with God, a faith that trusts His power even when we don't see immediate results. May we allow ourselves to "come down" from our anxieties, finding comfort and strength in the knowledge that He is always present, always with us, even when He seems physically distant.
