Does Jesus Want Us To Give Up Our Possessions? - Family Reflection Video

Does Jesus want us to really sell what we have and give to the poor?

In certain places at different times, Jesus commended people who had money and commented on ways to use it.

In a parable, He commended the wise servant who invested his master’s money, and returned it with interest.

He called those who manage money well wise.

He told his disciples to accept their civic duty by paying their taxes.

So what is He trying to tell us?

It looks like He is not against our working for money and managing it well to support our families and save for a rainy day, but He is telling us these are necessary and can be committed to God when He is put first.

So what does He want us to do?

Like the rich young man, we have kept the laws of God as we know them.

Like him, we are sincere in our desire for eternal life.

Now, He wants us to ask ourselves if we are really willing to put our trust in Him above all else.

He wants us to commit ourselves and all we have to Him. If you surrender everything to God, He will bless us with spiritual goods that far outweigh the fleeting joys of material goods.

How do we do that in our families?

We must teach our children:

"To realize that there is more to life than money and material possessions." (Lk. 12:15)

To prioritize their preferences and put God first. When they put God first, they will be able to build real treasure that will count for eternity by committing themselves and their possessions to God's service, and the service of all people.

We should also teach them that they should know their identity as children of God, maintain their identity while building relationships in the culture around them and turn their life into a generous, fruitful self-giving service to God and neighbor.

In reality, I think Jesus is asking the rich young man and us to surrender ourselves and our possessions and talents to God by sharing with others. When we do so, we will not go away sad. As St. Paul reminded the Romans, “Whoever believes in Him will not be disappointed.”

How willing are you to surrender everything to God and part with anything that might keep you from seeking eternal life with Jesus?
