Soar and Don

Soar and Don't Settle - Weekday Homily Video

Learn more about our faith

In the story of Jonathan Livingston Seagull, we encounter a seagull who refuses to settle for the ordinary. While the other birds are content scavenging for dead fish along the shore, Jonathan yearns for something more—he wants to fly higher and explore the deep sea. He challenges his community and, through determination, eventually soars to new heights, discovering a world beyond what others could imagine. Meanwhile, his companions remain content with their routine, never daring to dream or fly higher.

Jonathan's story mirrors St. Paul's challenge to the Corinthians: to seek the greatest spiritual gifts. These gifts are not healing, tongues, knowledge, or prophecy. Instead, the greatest gifts are deep faith, nourishing hope, and the simple yet profound act of love. Paul reminds us that these gifts are the essence of a truly fulfilled Christian life.

A Perfect Example

Jesus embodied these gifts perfectly. His miracles were never for spectacle but were acts of deep faith, hope, and love. They were meant to deepen our faith, bring hope by alleviating suffering, and reveal God's boundless love for His creation. Following Jesus means embracing these gifts and living them out in our daily lives.

To live with faith, hope, and love requires courage. It demands that we step out of our comfort zones, be present to others, and genuinely see their struggles and pains. It means offering comfort, not from a distance, but by being close and vulnerable with those who suffer.

Seeking Faith, Hope, and Love

Let us not waste our prayers on trivial concerns. Instead, let us pray for the gift of faith to deepen our relationships with God and our families. Let us seek the gift of hope, which fills us with empathy for others. And above all, let us pray for the gift of love that inspires us to wipe away the tears of a hurting world.

Let us strive for the greatness that Jesus embodied—a life dedicated to bringing faith, hope, and love to a broken world. And where does this mission begin? It begins right within our own families, where faith is nurtured, hope is shared, and love is lived.
