Who is this Anna we just heard about? She only appears in the scriptures here, in the narrative of the Presentation, what we know as the 4th Joyful Mystery of the Rosary. It’s an amazing event: AN EPIPHANY!
The Holy Spirit has brought Simeon to the Temple just at this moment to hold up the babe and proclaim that Salvation has arrived. Then Anna prophesies. But who is she?
She is what the Old Testament calls a “Daughter of Sion.” Throughout the scriptures we see iconic women of faith who hope in Salvation, like Sarah, Rachel, Myriam, Judith … Anna stands in in their line and here embodies them.
The source of valor and their true heroism is their simple yet resolute FAITH!
Generation after generation, the Daughters of Sion lived the covenant with the Lord in their families and passed on the faith to their children. So, this daughter of Sion is present to affirm the great testimony of Simeon.
The Scriptures make it quite clear that the FAMILY is fundamental in God’s plan. The All-Powerful Lord was born in a manger, of humble parents so that we may understand that.
Christmas is a beautiful time of family. We celebrate it so that families will be renewed in understanding this covenant with God that they are to live and transmit. What a beautiful and sacred responsibility!
Mary of Nazareth,
you are the incomparable Daughter of Sion.
Help us as parents to understand our holy task,
living Christ’s love.
Amen.
