Jesus doesn’t scold the woman for wanting better things for her sons; but he does give her some advice.
When a mother asked Jesus if he would sit her sons at his side in Heaven, the answer she received had little to do with power placement, and more to do with living. Jesus does not chastise the woman, he explains that His power doesn’t rest only with one person, but is in the relationship with God the Father.
In today’s terms, all the woman wanted for her sons was a good life. She sought to align her sons with people who were on the rise in this world so they could succeed; but the tensions between the world’s view and God’s is what rubs people the wrong way. Our planning and striving should be focused on doing the will of God.
What is it that you are asking for your family today … and have you checked in with Jesus to see what he has to say? What is Jesus’ advice for all of you?
I pray your family finds new strength and direction in your close relationship with God.
