It is now summertime in the Northern Hemisphere. I, like billions of human beings, love summertime. It can be a time of rest, vacation, time for family. Let it not be merely a superficial time, but rather true recreation: re-creation – for drinking from deep well springs that return us to what life is really about, that renew us and give us life. That can happen in simple, beautiful ways.
Over the weekend was able to go to a place I call home, a beach on Cape Cod that has meant so much to me throughout my life. I went to Mass at my old parish. I visited our family grave site. I saw some old friends. I took a long walk on the beach… finding ways to return to the treasure of the Kingdom of Heaven.
“The Kingdom of Heaven is like a treasure hidden in a field”… Christ Himself, Who is always with us, waiting for us to recognize Him.
We are free to choose: of course, what seems important to a lot of people is simply “having fun” – mindless diversions - or worse, all sorts of harmful activities that might seem to immediately pleasurable.
Or we can go deeper and choose what is really going to give us life: what will bring us closer together as family, with friends – and in the middle of it, to know that God truly is Love, the Love that binds us.
Finding the pearl of great price is something that we need to do in our everyday lives!
He is calling us to love Him - and to find Him in each other! The field where we will find the treasure is our daily life! Prioritize that!
The Lord talks of selling all for the Pearl of Great price. What we need to sell and get rid of in our lives is our self-centeredness; watching out of no 1; the way we try to manipulate to try to get reality our way and not God’s way.
“Selling everything” means to deeply trust in Jesus who is Himself the Kingdom of God among us.
Life moves so fast that it is hard to keep our focus. Whether it be on a family vacation or however else you can, please make sure you keep renewing your commitment to keep searching for and finding the Kingdom of Heaven, the Living Christ, in your very real life!
