How do we influence or change the culture of our time? Pope St. Paul VI, whom we remember today, invites us to change the culture, instead of ignoring the moral law that “doesn’t fit” our culture.
St. Paul VI, (Pope 1897-1978), is remembered for the encyclical Humanae Vitae issued in 1968. One of the messages in that powerful document advised us to:
Today’s Gospel invites us to reflect on our relationship with Jesus and on our role in the world. To guide us in our reflection, we can turn to the teachings of the Church, who according to Pope Francis:
“gives birth, suckles, gives growth, corrects, nourishes, and leads by the hand … we need a Church capable of rediscovering the maternal womb of mercy. Without mercy, we have little chance nowadays of becoming part of a world of “wounded” persons in need of understanding, forgiveness, and love.”
At times we are like Peter; we are Jesus’ ardent followers. But, also like Peter, we have betrayed Jesus many times by not living out faithfully his teachings and the teachings of His Church. What gives us confidence is the attitude of Jesus toward Peter, always forgiving, always willing to provide a second chance.
Today Jesus is inviting each of us and our families. He says, “Follow me.” This invitation is not directed to Peter alone. It is a call for all. What will be your response?
