We hear today David’s last words to Solomon: A father’s last words to his son, his dying wish.
It’s the moment of truth, time to speak from the heart of what is MOST IMPORTANT! He says, FOLLOW THE LORD, WALK IN HIS WAYS, KEEP HIS COMMANDS.
David’s words complement the Lord’s instructions to the apostles, his essential message to them as they go on mission. Simply stated: TRUST IN THE LORD! DEPEND ON HIM!
Venerable Father Peyton often spoke of his parting from his father when he was 19 and leaving Ireland to begin his life in the United States. His father had him get down on his knees before the family image of the Sacred Heart and to PROMISE SOLEMNLY THAT HE WOULD ALWAYS BE FAITHFUL TO THE LORD IN AMERICA. It made a PROFOUND IMPRESSION ON FATHER PAT for the rest of his life.
I invite you now to close your eyes and call to mind some Dads you, know. Pray for them right now. Pray that they know, that they realize that the most important thing they have to give their children is FAITH. When they give them their faith, they have the foundation. They have what they need to live, to TRUST IN THE LORD.
