God’s Tender Assurance - Weekday Homily Video

Learn more about our faith  |  Holy lives of inspiration

Today, we reflect on the readings from Isaiah and Matthew, we also commemorate Saint John of the Cross, a mystic and a teacher of deep faith. His life story intertwines beautifully with today's scriptural themes.

In the book of Isaiah, we hear God's tender assurances: “I will help you... I will make... I will answer...”

These promises are God's response to our human frailties and fears. They remind us that amidst life’s trials – just like the ones Saint John of the Cross endured – God is our steadfast helper and guide. John of the Cross, in his dark night of the soul, found profound comfort in the knowledge that God was with him, even in the most challenging moments.

Saint John of the Cross's life was a testimony to what Jesus speaks of in Matthew's Gospel: the radical nature of living the Christian life. John embodied this through his deep spiritual writings, his reform of the Carmelite order, and his unwavering commitment to God's will. He understood that being 'the least in the Kingdom of heaven' is a calling to humility, surrender, and deep trust in God's plan.

For us, particularly as families, Saint John's life is an inspiring reminder. In our daily lives – in the love we share, the challenges we face, and the faith we nurture within our homes – we are called to a similar radical trust in God. Our families can be the fertile ground where faith is sown and nurtured.

As we continue through this season of Advent, let us draw inspiration from Saint John of the Cross. May his devotion and trust in God, even amidst trials, be a guiding light for our families. Let us seek to deepen our relationship with God, confident in His promises, as we prepare our hearts for the coming of Christ.

May Saint John of the Cross intercede for our families, so that we may find strength in God's promises and live out our faith with the courage and conviction he showed throughout his life.
