Parental Authority — Family Reflection Video

Celebrating family life  |  Healing the family

The Church celebrates the Solemnity of Saints Peter and Paul on June 29th every year. On this day, we are reminded of the profound significance of these two great apostles in the life of the Church. Their unwavering faith, dedication, and willingness to embrace the cross serve as powerful examples for all of us, especially for families who seek to live out their Christian vocation.

In the Gospel passage from Matthew 16:13-23, we witness a pivotal moment in the life of St. Peter. Jesus promises him primacy over the entire Church, entrusting him with the keys of the Kingdom of Heaven. This authority, granted to Peter for the benefit of the Church, was not meant to end with him but was to be passed down to his successors. Thus, the Bishop of Rome, the Pope, is recognized as the successor of Peter.

Domestic Church

The Church, founded on the rock of Peter, relies on this unbroken line of succession to ensure unity, cohesion, and fidelity to the teachings of Christ throughout the ages. Just as it was necessary for every Church to be in agreement with the Roman Church, so too must families strive for unity and harmony in faith.

Each family is a domestic church. As domestic churches, families are called to be faithful reflections of the larger Church. Within the family, parents have the responsibility to exercise their God-given authority, just as Peter was entrusted with authority over the Church. This authority is not meant for domination or control but should always be exercised with love, humility, and a spirit of service.

Kingdom of Heaven

Parents, you are called to be the shepherds and teachers of your children, leading and guiding them in the ways of faith and by example. You have been given the keys to the Kingdom of Heaven in the sense that you are responsible for nurturing your children's spiritual growth and providing them with the necessary foundation for a life of discipleship. The experience of the risen Lord transformed Saints Peter and Paul. Sharing your God experience with your children can help transform your family.

May the intercession of Saints Peter and Paul accompany us on this journey, and may their steadfast faith be a guiding light for our families. Amen.
