How Do We Make Choices? Family Reflection Video

Holy lives of inspiration

In the midst of today’s crises: social, economic, moral, and political, we as leaders, parents, friends, or peers, need a solid base for making right decisions.

Recently, a young graduate in the process of discernment came to me for counsel. As I listened to her, I was pleasantly surprised to learn that the principles and values which she expected to use as guidelines in making her choice were those set forth for us by God in His Word.

In today’s first reading, we meet some interesting people: Ahab, the King; Jezebel, his wife; and Naboth, the owner of a vineyard near Ahab’s palace.

Here we have four people. Two looked to God for guidance in making their choice. Two based their choices on their own selfish desires.

The young graduate based her choices on the principles and values of God not her own desires. Naboth made his choice for God’s principles even when his life and property was at stake. Whereas Ahab and his did not listen to God’s principles, but let their own desires guide their choices.

What guides you and your family in decision-making? Is it what pleases you or what agrees with the principles of God’s world?
