How to Say “Goodbye” … With Faith: Family Reflection Video

Strengthening family unity

Often, goodbyes are difficult. In my family we’re always the last to leave … the short distance between where you put your coat on and the door isn’t measured in feet but in time, as we remember one more thing or story to tell before leaving.

Jesus offers us help for difficult goodbyes through a prayer for the disciples at the Last Supper ... a prayer of unity and a prayer of consolation.

“Holy Father, keep them in your name that you have given me, so that they may be one just as we are one.” John 17:11

He’s reminding us that it is through God, the Father and the Son, we may be one, both now and in the future. Though there might be a distance of separation in each of our farewells, there is a unity in spirit. And one day, a unity in body and soul, that will remain as long as we stay in the Name of God.

Yes, goodbyes are difficult. I’m sure you and your family have experienced them. A son or daughter leaves home for the first time, a close friend moves away, a loved one goes home to God … there are many examples. What are some goodbyes you and your family have had to deal with? How did you console and support each other?

Thank you for joining us today. May God bless you and your family.
