Mayhem or a Civilization of Love? Family Reflection Video

Love thy Neighbor

In the midst of the mayhem following the death of Mr. George Floyd, today, we are invited to reflect on the purpose, process, and product of the law.

I believe the determined conversion for all can happen through the achievement of the purpose, process, and product of law. In today's gospel, Jesus speaks about the purpose of the Mosaic law. What is the purpose of the law? In their encyclicals, Popes, Paul VI and John Paul II say about the purpose of the law as the establishment of "a civilization of love."

The process of achieving that purpose can come by living the "beatitudes." (Mathew 5:3-10): by showing mercy, being a peacemaker, and enduring persecution for standing up for what we know to be right.

To establish of "a civilization of love" we must:

  1. Return to God in a spirit of determined conversion and identify the sin of racism or injustice of any sort and call it for what it is. As Pope Francis said, "We cannot tolerate or turn a blind eye to racism and exclusion in any form."

  2. Reject anything that triggers and even justifies violence and must live out the beatitudes of Jesus in our daily lives.

  3. Assume responsibility for defeating anything that stands in the way of building "a civilization of love." This will enable us and our families to live in a more peaceful world now and be more ready for eternal life.
