Modern-day Apostles - Weekday Homily Video
The Gospel of Luke calls us to simplify our lives and embrace the mission of serving others. Jesus sent out the twelve Apostles, with nothing but the power of God, urging them to travel light and focus on spreading the Good News.
This call to service continues to echo through the ages, inspiring countless individuals to answer the call to mission. One such young missionary, fresh from graduation and filled with a lifelong passion for serving God, embarked on a journey to Northeast India. Eager to begin this new chapter, the missionary was met with a curious question from a fellow traveler: "Which machine do you repair?" It was a lighthearted reminder that the path of a missionary is often misunderstood.
Life in the missions was far from easy. A simple room on a veranda, bamboo walls, a leaky roof, no running water, and meager meals were the daily reality. Cold winds whipped through the makeshift dwelling, and newspapers offered the only protection. Yet, even amidst these hardships, there was a profound sense of beauty and purpose. The challenges were met with a spiritual director's wise words: "If you grow in the fire, you will not fade in the sun."
Demanding Yet Transformative
Beyond teaching seven classes a day, the missionary's life revolved around the holistic care of over 100 boarding children. From morning routines and hygiene to lessons, playtime, and evening studies, the demands were constant. It was a demanding yet transformative experience, a "U-turn" that shaped character and deepened faith.
We are all called to be modern-day apostles. Whether our mission field is across the globe or in our own neighborhoods, let us embrace it with the same trust and zeal as the Apostles. Let us simplify our lives, shedding unnecessary attachments, and focus on serving others with the love of Christ.
Courage and Sacrifice
Let us reflect on the courage and sacrifice of all missionaries. May their example ignite in us a renewed passion for sharing the Gospel and serving others, so that together, we may build God's Kingdom here on earth.
You may be wondering, who was that missionary in the story? It was your humble servant, standing before you today.
May we all find the strength to embrace our own missions, wherever they may lead us.
"Lord, inspire us to be channels of your grace and healing love. Free us from worldly attachments, that we may joyfully pursue your will. May we witness the joy of the Gospel, both in word and deed."
