Overcoming Jealousy by Remembering and Praying: Family Reflection Video

Healing the family  |  Seasonal Reflections

This Lent is our time to remember how fortunate we are to have a God who is good, loving and just.

Today’s reading illustrates to us as readers and believers the problems that can arise within families.

Joseph and his brothers never seemed to be on the same page, as they despised him for being the youngest and seemingly the ‘favorite’ of the lot. But how did this hatred escalate to the point that they wished to end the life of their own brother?

Joseph’s brothers failed to remember that they, too, were once ‘the favorite’ and received a majority of their father’s love and attention simply because they were the youngest and in the most need of help. This misunderstanding caused them to develop an incredible amount of disdain towards Joseph.

Talk with your family about what you think might have happened if Joseph’s brothers went to their father and shared their concerns? Then pray together:

Lord, may we read the words of Genesis today as a message to always talk our way through any problems we might have with someone – especially those within our families – in order to draw ourselves closer to You. May we always look towards You, Lord, as a way to find the answers that we are so desperately in search of and lead us away from the evil tendencies shown by Joseph’s brothers. Amen.
