There are some debts money cannot cover, and something much greater is needed.
A young boy did his chores for the day and then gave his mother a paper that had the amount she owed him for doing these things. His mother flipped the paper over and listed the many things she had done for him, such as stay up when he had nightmares, take care of him when he was sick, carry him in her womb before he was born… She tallied the total to be ‘free of charge.’
The boy cast away his list, marking it as ‘paid in full’ because to cost of his mother’s love was greater than any chore he could do.
Jesus tries to explain today that he has come to pay our debts in full, but he is met with disbelief and scorn. His good works we ignored because others could not believe his love could be so unconditional. Do we recognize the sacrifices our family members have made for us?
Today, we pray for those who have taken care of us, worked for us, and loved us. God bless our families!
