“With eyes of faith consider the greatness of your mission and the wonderful amount of good which you can accomplish” by Blessed Basil Moreau,CSC
In today’s gospel we have Jesus coming ashore on the lake, as soon as he disembarks from the people, many people immediately recognized him, and started pushing and struggling to touch him looking for healing from all their ailments. What did they recognize in Jesus that moved them? It is possible that they had witnessed the miraculous deeds done somewhere else. Now, they recognized him as one with power from God to heal and make whole bodies, limbs, minds and hearts that were beset with diseases and afflictions. They believed that even by mere pressing up to Jesus and touching the fringes of his garment, they would be made well. They were filled with expectant faith that Jesus is ready to meet their needs. We know that Jesus’ mission was to do the will of God and specifically that is what is demonstrated in actions of healing and forgiving sins.
Do we recognize the Lord’s presence in our lives like those in Jesus’ time?
-
It is faith that can open our hearts and minds to be able to acknowledge the Lord’s presence working in and through our lives.
-
It is often in our brokenness that we seek out the Lord with the greatest urgency. Something happens to us that brings home to us our vulnerability, our weakness, our inability to manage. It is often those situations that tend to draw us more to recognize God’s presence.
-
Due to our limitations and the struggles that come with desperate situations we discover that we depend on him. We need not wait for desperate situation to reinvigorate our desire to recognize God’s presence.
-
It is important that we ask for his grace to always fan a living flame of determination, trust in our hearts to accept his gift of healing presence. To let that flame within us be shared through our commitment to bring others to Jesus for healing, to reach out to those who cannot make it themselves to Jesus.
-
We can bring Jesus to those in our families, the neighbors, and those around us in all sorts of simple, practical ways that are nonetheless truly life giving for them, in the way that Jeus was a life-giving presence for those who came to him or were brought to him.
-
Just as our founder Blessed Basil Moreau, notes we should us our eyes of faith to be mindful and alert to God’s presence all around us, and how we can share that with those who might be blind to it because of various difficulties, struggle, or any desperate situation.
The people’s faith in Jesus’ power, to heal serves as a powerful example of unwavering faith. We can draw inspiration from this and remember that faith can move mountains in our own lives. Jesus ‘willingness to heal and to alleviate the suffering of those who came to him, teaches us about compassion and the importance of reaching out to those in need. We should strive to extend a helping hand to those who are hurting, just as Jesus did. We are all capable of great good and with the help of the Holy Spirit we can live as that unique image of God’s goodness that we were created to be.
