Rosary Month, Saint Bernadette and the School of Mary

Rosary Month, Saint Bernadette and the School of Mary

School of Mary

Everyone has heard of Lourdes and Saint Bernadette and something of apparitions and miracle healings there, but did you know that it all began because our Blessed Mother came to prepare young Bernadette to receive her first Holy Communion? It’s as simple as that.

Poor, illiterate, speaking only the local dialect and not French, Bernadette seemed incapable of learning the catechism. She searched for a teacher, but her search proved fruitless—until OUR HOLY MOTHER, THE GOOD MOTHER, CAME HERSELF and Bernadette became a stellar pupil in the “School of Mary”.

Did you know that each of the 18 times that Our Lady appeared she led Bernadette in the prayer of the Rosary? Why would she do that?

Saint John Paul II, a brilliant intellectual, himself said the Holy Rosary was his favorite prayer. He also coined the phrase, “the School of Mary” to describe what the Rosary is and how and why it is so important. There is an entire path to great sanctity (the greatest human aspiration) contained in this string of beads which so many dismiss as repetitive and boring. It is truly a “school” that begins with the simplest heartfelt prayer that children take to like breathing when given the chance. Starting there, Our Lady invites us to journey with her through the whole life of Christ, a contemplation of the Word of God who can then profoundly change our hearts and lives and make us like Himself!

This is what happened to young Bernadette Soubirous, opening her to a life of high sanctity. Testimony of this is the incorrupt remains of her body lying for all to see in the convent where she spent the second half of her life.St.Bernadettes-body-in-Nevere

Our Holy Mother Mary would like to lead you on this same path of holiness, in her “School”.

Maybe you have hardly met the Lord, but you know something is lacking in your life; perhaps you have the sneaking suspicion that HE is the One you’re looking for. (The truth is that it is He who is looking for you!) Maybe you want to pray but you think you don’t know how. Maybe you’ve been a Catholic all your life, but you’ve been distracted – as so many people are - by secondary things and you want to return to what, to WHO IS MOST IMPORTANT.

For the last approximately 150 years, Holy Mother Church has called all her children to return to the School of Mary in a more intentional way during October, calling it the Month of the Rosary. This is meant renew our commitment to pray the Holy Rosary.
