Salt, Light, and Trust: Family Reflection Video

Salt, Light, and Trust: Family Reflection Video

Holy lives of inspiration

Today's readings brought me back to one of my first discoveries about healing. Like most kids, I had my share of skinned knees and elbows that were treated by this fluorescent red colored liquid called mercurochrome. These scrapes would heal in about a week, that is, until one trip to the ocean where the saltwater miraculously sped up the process. That was my "aha moment" with the healing properties of salt.

Likewise, as an adult, I've noticed how a sunny day can lift my spirits even if I'm only outside for minutes, just that brief time in the warmth and brightness can bring a positive effect.

I thought about these times when I prayed about today's gospel, where Jesus tells us that we are the salt of the earth and light of the world. In every time, but definitely, right now, the healing properties of salt are needed. And so is the hope and clarity of vision that comes from the light of Christ.

But, maybe you feel like you're running low on both, perhaps you feel like the woman who Elijah asked for help.  Your oil and flour supply or trust is nearing the bottom of the jug, and you're discouraged and anxious.

My brothers and sisters, if we're called to be the salt and light to our families, neighborhoods, and the world. What do we do when we're running on empty? The answer is the same as it was for that woman; be not afraid, trust in God, stay close to God, and people like Elijah, who both challenge and encourage us.

Against all the odds, that woman listened to the message of God through Elijah. We have the same message from God in today's readings; a message of challenge and hope and a message of purpose to be salt and light for others.

I’d like to invite you to join me in reflecting on two questions.

First, what are you and your family running low on?

And second, how can you bring healing and hope in the Name of Christ?

May God bless you and your families this holy day!
