Jesus makes a big decision when his disciples answer his question.
Hearing the talk of people, Jesus asks his disciples who people say he is. They answer: some say he’s John the Baptist, some say Elijah, some say just a prophet. He then asks who they say he is. Peter answers that Jesus is “Christ, the Son of the Living God.”
Jesus then declares Peter as the rock of the Church, the stable base on which his ministry will continue because Peter’s faith is sure and true. When he has a hard time accepting Jesus’ fate on the cross, Jesus rebukes him. Peter’s struggle is also ours. We stay close to Jesus, but are unsure in times of trial. It is this empowerment, to be so humbly devoted, that makes us a great community within Christ.
