The Golden Rule - Weekday Homily Video

Love thy Neighbor  |  Strengthening family unity

Today's Gospel offers a powerful yet simple message: the Golden Rule. "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you." This isn't just an ancient saying; it's a cornerstone for Christian living, with the potential to transform our families and our world.

The Golden Rule reminds us that God created each of us in His image, with unique gifts and a purpose. Yet, sometimes we struggle with negativity, feeling unloved or inferior. Modern psychology even tells us that self-love is a prerequisite for loving others truly.

Jesus brings God's transformative love, changing our self-image. In the Gospels, he constantly uplifted individuals. He sees our worth, just like He saw the potential in Matthew the tax collector. Despite Matthew's feelings of unworthiness, Jesus called him forth.

Examples of Selfless Love

  • Modern Day: Pope Francis emphasizes mercy and compassion for the poor, just like Dr. Paul Farmer, who brought medical care to the world's most vulnerable. Malala Yousafzai's fight for girls' education shows the Golden Rule in action—valuing every person's right to learn. Even former President Jimmy Carter, building homes with Habitat for Humanity, embodies service to others.
  • Holy People: Mother Teresa treated the dying with dignity, recognizing them as God's children. St. Francis gave up his wealth to serve the poor, understanding the importance of seeing Christ in others. St. Vincent de Paul dedicated his life to those in need, and Dorothy Day championed social justice—all living examples of the Golden Rule.

The Golden Rule at Home

Now, let's bring this principle home. The Golden Rule means recognizing each family member's worth and treating them with kindness, patience, and love. It's about active listening, forgiveness, and service. Imagine a family dinner where everyone feels heard and respected—that's the power of the Golden Rule.

Let the Golden Rule be our family's "rule-of-thumb." By living it, we honor God, bring peace and love into our homes, and become a beacon of Christ's love in our community.
