The Holy Spirit – Get to Know the Mysterious Third Person of the Trinity

Learn more about our faith

He’s wind, He’s fire, He’s inspiration -- but lots of folks don’t know a lot about the mysterious divine person called the Holy Spirit.

What - or who - is the Holy Spirit? Where does he show up in Scripture, and in our lives? Kai and Libby fill you in on the most mysterious person of the Trinity.

Diving Deeper

  1. What symbols of the Holy Spirit are most resonant for you? How do you perceive the presence of the Holy Spirit in your daily life?

  2. Which gifts and fruits of the Spirit are you most drawn to? Which gifts and fruits of the Spirit do you find the most resistance towards?

  3. What fruits of the Holy Spirit do you see unfolding in your life? How does closeness to or distance from the Holy Spirit affect your life day to day?

Activity

In all your hardships, ask the Holy Spirit to console you. In your decision making, ask the Spirit to help guide you. In your interactions with others, ask the Holy Spirit to teach you what to say and flow through your actions. Take time to breathe and reflect on the Holy Spirit within your breath. Let the Spirit fill you.

Reflection by Father Vince Kuna, C.S.C.

The Holy Spirit was formerly known as the “Holy Ghost.” I remember this because in my first confession, the ancient-of-days Irish priest absolved me, “In the name of the Father, and of the Son and of Holy Ghost.” It was pretty cool. That should give you a sense of how mysterious this third person of the Trinity is, that the Church can change the name of it. Try slipping in “ghost” the next time you lead grace before meal. You’ll probably get some puzzled responses. And perhaps, this can be a rightly jarring entry into the mystery of the Holy Spirit.
