It’s great to visit the Father Peyton Center in North Easton, Massachusetts for a few days! As I was born and raised around here and I have served in Family Rosary for so many years, this area will always be “home” for me. Some will remember that our Provincial Superior asked me to go to Santiago, Chile, so I moved at Christmas. As I have also served in that part of the world before, I was happy to say “yes,” and I have been getting settled in there well.
The Fundamental Value of Family
People ask me, "How is life there?" Most everyone knows that poverty has plagued South America for a long time, but faith has been strong and that is something that we here in North America could admire. Now I’d say that Chile has a sector that is a bit better off, but the working-class majority still struggles to get by. However, secularization has become more popular and has been weakening faith — while the Church has had big challenges. We all know that the world is a complicated place and Chile has its own brand of complexity. I look at so many people there and I see so many sheep without a Shepherd. What they have – what they still have – is family. The central value of family.
The Love and Faith of Families
At Mass this week we have been hearing parts of the Book of Tobit, a beautiful story of how the Lord works through love and faith in families, leading them through challenges and adversity, and sustaining hope. He guides them to new life. In the family, children too come to know they are children of God, holy and strong in faith and virtue.
The Mission of Family Rosary
Family Rosary has a fundamental mission in Chile: to help people realize that in the love they look for and find in family, God is calling to them, desiring them to find Him. He wants to guide them, to bring them to their true home, to bring them to Himself. What they need, who they need, is Jesus.
Mother Mary, help us to help you lead your children to Jesus.
