To Judge or to Love - Weekday Homily Video

Love thy Neighbor

Today, I would like to share a touching and inspiring story that reflects the essence of today’s reading. It is a story that reminds us of the importance of putting the well-being of others before rigid principles, a lesson we can draw from the actions of a charitable Protestant couple during the challenging times of World War II.

A Fence Extended with Love

In the midst of a tumultuous era, this couple, along with many Catholics, extended their hands in generosity to help numerous Jewish families escape the clutches of the Gestapo. Their selfless acts of kindness and courage exemplified the true spirit of love and humanity. This couple became so close to the Catholics who were working with them that they even attended church. However, when these noble souls passed away, their Catholic friends encountered an unexpected obstacle.

Seeking a final resting place for their friends in the Catholic cemetery, they were met with resistance from the local Church authorities. Unfazed by the denial, the Catholics devised a solution. They chose a plot of land right next to the fence of the Catholic cemetery, and after the burial, under the cover of night, they moved the fence to embrace the charitable couple within the sacred confines.

Rigid Principle Versus the Person

This tale urges us to reflect on the dangers of becoming overly attached to rules and principles at the expense of doing what is truly right. The Pharisees were correct in their “principle.” No one should work on the Sabbath. The disciples, who were probably looking for a shortcut, passed through standing grain, picking some of them and munching as they trudged. The Pharisees pounced on this to condemn the men and their leader. They preferred to keep the principle while disregarding people. Just as the Pharisees clung to the Sabbath principle, condemning the disciples for picking grain on that sacred day, we are reminded that our commitment to principles should never overshadow our duty to honor and respect individuals.

Jesus, in His teachings, emphasized the depth of true religion, warning us that there is more to it than attending church and temple, performing rituals, and obeying laws.

Our faith calls us to prioritize compassion, mercy, and the dignity of every person above all else. Jesus did not put the cart before the horse; instead, He upheld the intrinsic value of each individual.

The Core Tenets of Our Faith

As we navigate our spiritual journey, let us be vigilant not to lose sight of the core tenets of our faith: love for one another, acts of mercy, and a deep respect for the dignity of every human being.

Are we not called to uphold compassion, mercy and dignity of the person above all?
