Trusting In God

Trusting In God's Power - Family Reflection Video

Why pray?  |  Holy lives of inspiration

In today's Gospel, Jesus said, "Put out into deep water and lower your nets for a catch." Simon said in reply, "Master, we have worked hard all night and have caught nothing, but at your command I will lower the nets."

Peter was a veteran fisherman. The men worked whole night and were exhausted. Peter could have denied what Jesus said, but instead he obeyed and the result was amazing.

Many of us feel exhausted and discouraged over what is happening around us: beginning with the breakdown of social structures, especially the family, the increase in poverty, political corruption and paralysis, environmental challenges, and failure of mainstream institutions.

Many people of goodwill are trying to fight back with our human efforts and technologies. What can we do to break away from some of our old patterns of trusting only in our human power?

As a person who had experience with the highest power, Peter was able to let go and let God.

When Peter, and James and John, the sons of Zebedee, saw what Jesus did when they trusted and obeyed Him, they were so convinced of His deity that they left their boats and followed Him to become fishers of men. I wonder if they really knew what being a fisher of men meant or how it would be done.

We need to see ourselves as children of light. We need to accept the prayer Paul prayed for the Colossians and reimagine ourselves changed as a result of this prayer. We must see ourselves endowed with patience, blessed with the wisdom of God’s will, and strong with strength from His power. When we see and accept this image of ourselves, we will be more ready to give up old patterns and trust God as we move on.

Dear Friends, we don’t really know what is ahead for us as we deal with the challenges of our time, but we can step up in faith as Peter did.

Like the apostles with an open mind, an open heart, and an open will let us prepare ourselves by accepting ourselves as children of light and seeing ourselves as equipped by God Himself.

Are we ready to accept the prayer Paul prayed for the Colossians and reimagine ourselves changed as a result of this prayer?
