Unity, in the Holy Trinity and Mirrored in the Holy Family

Charisms of Holy Cross

Venerable Patrick Peyton’s message of family prayer has helped millions of families find their way through life - with all its challenges – on the road to eternal life! We are contemplating key foundations, “charisms” of the spirituality that he learned in his Religious Order, the Congregation of Holy Cross. The second Holy Cross charism is Unity, in the Holy Trinity and mirrored in the Holy Family. Today I want to focus on the triune God.

God is love, St John’s first Letter teaches us. This is a living truth we participate in. Think of that moment when a husband and wife receive their newborn: isn’t’ this is one of the great expressions of this reality of God? In spite of whatever may happen, we are surrounded by God’s love.

Parents-Meet-Baby

Love is who God is: within Himself, the communion of Father, Son and Spirit. We’re not talking about just nice sounding ideas, rather, profound realities. They are deep mysteries, yes, but in our human experience we can in some way see them with our eyes and touch them with our hands (1 John 1:1), both in the depth of the heart in prayer and in the depth of our human relationships.

God is love, so His deep intention is that humanity live in this communion. It is love of God that is the reason for all to live in unity – and the grace to make it possible!

Christians know that crises like what COVID-19 has provoked become calls to us from the Lord to make this love and unity shine by our unhesitating heartfelt response!

Please join me again next week when we'll continue this topic as it relates to the Holy Family.
