We have moved into the new school year with all its possibilities. We may also feel a little nostalgia for years past. We often remember the past as simpler, easier – even if it wasn’t that simple.
We know that life unfolds in relative time. Years fly by, and sometimes we feel “the day will never end.” With new challenges, what’s familiar gives way to uncertainty. Our experience beckons us to move forward; in this way, we test ourselves and deepen our experience of life – realizing who we are becoming. I believe we find God’s Spirit in our longing to grow – grace at work in our lives.
Receiving photos and videos of the grandkids is a lovely blessing. A recent video captured our young grandson setting out on his first two-wheel bicycle ride. It was time to let the training wheels go. Momentous! He navigated the pavement simply trusting his sense of balance. I have to admit, as I watched the video, I held my breath a bit even though I knew the ride had been successful, indeed exhilarating!
As the video unfolded, we heard the voices of parents and brother cheering the little fellow on – “good job!” “You’re doing great!” We could see in his face focused intensity and delight. One parent jogged along, close at hand, in case an intervention was necessary. All went well.
It would be hard to underestimate the power and efficacy of being told we’re doing a good job. Encouragement keeps us in balance and helps us realize a sense of enduring hope. “I can do this.”
“May the God of endurance and encouragement grant you to think in harmony with one another, in keeping with Christ Jesus,” (Romans 15:5)
Family voices, cheering us on, standing by to safeguard us, bless us with harmony, endurance, and a balanced life.
The relationship into which Jesus invites His followers is a life in balance with God’s mysterious, encouraging grace, beckoning us into the future. It is as if the Lord is telling us, “You can do this.” The Lord is always present in life’s balancing acts, the off-balance moments, and the stumbles.
“…I am with you always, until the end of the age.” (Matthew 28:20)
In our family prayer, let us ask the Lord to help us hear His voice cheering us on, to feel His presence standing close by to safeguard us, and giving us the balance to move forward in His loving care.
