Reflections of Family and Faith
"The family that prays together stays together." - Venerable Patrick Peyton
I am learning more and more that perfection comes when we realize that life is not about being perfect – it’s about being “real.” We live in a world where Instagram photos, pretty hairstyles, and lots of “friends” on social media seem like they are important … but they are not. Life is about relationships, love, time with people who care, and knowing God. It is not about competition, showing off, and complaining about the politics on Facebook.

When I was a little girl, my daddy used to say, “Life is an empty canvas. You can paint on it, whatever you want to.” I wanted to paint a masterpiece. What about you? What are you painting on the canvas of your life? The stories he told and the life lessons he taught painted in my soul the faith to believe that nothing was impossible with God. I am so thankful that my dad passed down to me the wings of hope. I, in turn, did the same with my seven children. As they left the nest they were ready to soar, as high as an eagle, and eager to make a difference in this world. Along with giving them their wings and encouraging them to paint their own masterpiece, I taught them to see. I tried to give them eyes of wonder, to see life as a miracle and give them ears to hear the voice of God in their hearts. I tried to feed them the word of God and the Truth of our Catholic faith daily, through prayer and example. Those eternal words were sewn in their soul. Now as a seasoned mother, I water, weed, and pray that one day it will produce a great harvest. I fervently pray for conversion of their souls. Miracles happen, but the greatest miracle is a change in the heart where God alone works. With a heart set on God alone, nothing is impossible. That is the greatest masterpiece of all, and that is the example of the saints.

Not too long ago, I was scrolling through social media when I stopped on a post from a page I follow. The question that prompted a stop to my scrolling was asking, “When do you find the best time to pray?”

My dog, Bailey, walks with me and a little ahead. She can often smell or sense things I cannot, so in those moments, she’ll take the lead, but otherwise she stays with me, side by side.

Turning off my alarm clock on an otherwise typical Monday morning, I say my thank you to God for another day and renew my conviction to be better today than the day before.
