At Mass this week we have been hearing from the Book of Tobit. For those who haven’t been able to follow, today we are coming to the conclusion: after a very successful trip to Media, guided by the Archangel Raphael disguised as a human, Tobit’s son Tobias returns home to Nineveh and heals his father’s blindness through a remedy Raphael has given him.

Last Saturday I went on a personal pilgrimage. It was the birthday of my beloved Aunt Mary who died years ago, and I realized that I was way overdue for a visit to her grave and the graves of my grandparents, about an hour from here, near the Church of my childhood.

About 120 years ago the English poet, Francis Thompson, wrote these beautiful words: O world invisible, we view thee: O world intangible, we touch thee: O world unknowable, we know thee: Inapprehensible, we clutch thee! May we never cease to be amazed at how the Holy Trinity desires so much to come close to us, how Christ becomes like us, as the letter to the Hebrews says, so that WE CAN LOVE HIM, WE CAN KNOW GOD.
