I think what I love most about summer is how close I am to the threshold of heaven. It isn’t the extra prayer time, or the time spent outside in the glory of God’s creation, or even the extra sacrifices demanded by a household that has stepped away from the routine of the school year. It’s the souls that run around on tiny bare feet.

When I was pregnant with my first child, my affluent cousin advised me to hire someone who could come talk care of the baby one-half day each week so that I could get out of the house. Out of surprise and skepticism, I laughed in her face. We have never had money enough that I could pay for regular help. Fast-forward five years.
