"The family that prays together stays together." - Venerable Patrick Peyton

Parenting is hard. Sleepless nights, barf, tantrums, food wars, rainy soccer games, bickering, carpools and endless pairs of new shoes. There is exhaustion — physical, mental and emotional. Questioning my decisions. Falling into the comparison trap and the fear that climbing out is impossible. The sadness of knowing they will leave one day and sometimes hoping that day comes soon.

In this series, we’re talking about serving our household during Lent. In the last post, I explained that I felt God was calling me to serve my household instead of stacking up a bunch of spiritual practices, which is what I enjoy doing for Lent. He gently asked me to set myself down and to do what He asked which is to serve my household. To be fair, I’m not very good at serving my household, so it doesn’t surprise me that God wants me to die to myself, experience some discomfort and tackle homemaking and quality time with my family.

Days are gifts from God. Sometimes it’s hard to recognize this when we become busy mothers doing our daily work of love. I have found lifting up small, short prayers are really very BIG when it comes to coming closer to Jesus in my days. Thank the Lord for short moments of faith when we can lift a prayer to help us through.

It was the spring of 2002 when Steve and I began praying as a couple. Ten years into our marriage, we were finally vulnerable enough to share our deepest spiritual desires with one another. Still, I feared being mocked or misunderstood, though Steve gave me no reason to hesitate.
