Reflections of Family and Faith
"The family that prays together stays together." - Venerable Patrick Peyton
I recently was filtering through some old family photos and papers. I find it helpful to sift through the many things we store in boxes. I’ve discovered that over time, some items we have kept can take on new meaning, and sometimes it’s easy to let go of things we no longer treasure. It’s good to simplify.

In this part of the world, we are plunging into the heat and humidity of summer. We carefully schedule our outdoor activity for cooler and shadier times of the day. A quiet breeze refreshes us, staying hydrated is essential, and visiting the shore restores us.

I’ve been thinking about birthdays lately. Perhaps this is because both my wife and I have celebrations coming soon. Birthdays have a way of surfacing a lot of feelings and memories. When our granddaughter turned two years old, there was the usual gathering of friends and family to celebrate. The children wore festive birthday hats. During the happy, fun-filled event, the birthday girl happened to pull the elastic below her chin that held her hat in place.

When our children and grandchildren were young, we occasionally would get them small toy balsa wood gliders. The planes were about twelve inches in length and wingspan. We helped the kids gently piece together the few fragile parts. There was much anticipation.

It is spring in our yard. The trees have leaves, Hosta plants are thriving, and the rhododendron is blossoming. The natural world is encouraging us to hope. I’m surprised each year to discover where new Hostas have begun to sprout. They have appeared some distance from the established plant, in a corner of the yard, nestled against a fence post, or at the edge of a path. Creation has within itself the purpose of growth and the energy to spread forth, proclaiming life in the most unlikely places. I suspect wind and rain spread the seeds. Water and wind remind us of God’s Spirit.
