The other day the Pharisees asked about the resurrection. Today they asked Jesus what is the Kingdom of God?
He answered, “it is all around you”. Jesus was telling the Pharisees to look around, and what you see is what you get: The Kingdom of God.
This may not satisfy a lot of us and rather than heed Jesus words this morning not to run off in pursuit of those who tell us there he is, or he is here, we do it just the same in part because it is hard to reconcile having to embrace the suffering and rejection that abounds in the kingdom of God.
There is an eloquence in the reading from the Book of Wisdom this morning that describes Wisdom as intelligent, holy, unique all-powerful, all-seeing. The Kingdom is that too. But it is also a place that the psalmist describes for us today when he says God’s word sheds light, gives understanding to the simple and God’s rays of love shine upon us.
We will never exhaust our understanding of God’s kingdom nor do we have to. Some minds will not be content with the simply explanation that it is all around you and will go on and on in search of an answer. But for some of us what Jesus told us this morning is all we need to hear. Look around you. What do you see. What do you hear? Look within.
