Gifts of the Spirit – Family Reflection Video

Learn more about our faith  |  Return to the Church

That was quite a list of sins or human imperfections that Saint Paul detailed for us his letter to the Galatians! It is interesting to note that sin, in all its disguises, have been around from the earliest of times.

The good news is that Jesus came among us to show us a better way of life. The Kingdom of God is among us. We are temples of the Holy Spirit, and our work is to glorify God who is within each one of us.

Although sin prevails, the gifts of love, joy, peace, patience, and kindness are ours to possess. Maybe not in the measure that we would always like, but they are still ours to be had and we have them.

I am reminded of the disciple who asked Jesus to increase his faith and Jesus had to remind him that he possessed enough faith to do extraordinary things. It is the same with us who possess the gifts of the Spirit: love, joy, peace, patience, and kindness. We have them and we have the potential to possess them in abundance if we choose to live by the Spirit.

The psalmist today said as much. Those who follow the Lord will have the light of life. Follow not the way of the wicked, instead feast on the Word of God, day, and night.

Recently the Director of our Retirement Home at Notre Dame, IN, vacationed with our local religious community for a week. At table, inquiries were made about some of the men who lived among us but now reside there. It is always interesting to hear stories about them.

One resident we all knew well was said to have quite a routine regarding his meals. He fixes himself an elaborate breakfast. His meal plan is to eat like a king at breakfast, a queen at lunch and a pauper at supper. It keeps him fit.

Our meal plan of God’s word at breakfast, lunch and dinner will keep us fit and enable us to enjoy more fully the gifts of love, joy, peace, patience, and kindness that we now possess.
