Saint Martin de Porres was born in Lima, Peru. He entered the Dominican Order and served as barber, a farm laborer, and an infirmarian, where he became well known for his special care of the sick and the poor.
Martin and his sister were half-castes in a society where that fact unfortunately resulted in a loss of privilege. How appropriate that we celebrate Saint Martin de Porres today.
He can teach us how to speak out for God in a society that has great difficulty dealing with race and poverty, as well as difficulty caring for the outcast.
On Sunday, November 1, 2020, we celebrated the Feast of All Saints.
In Matthew’s Gospel, Jesus spoke of His disciples blessed way of life. Jesus called them to be poor in spirit, meek and pure of heart, and asked them to trust in God for everything. Martin did as much. Jesus called His disciples ‘blessed’ because they had caught onto his understanding of life.
During his years as pope, Saint John Paul ll named over 1,000 Saints. These Saints were not set apart by their intelligence, talent, education, work, mother tongue, or culture; but by the fact that like Jesus, His mother Mary, and Martin de Porres – they accepted their life as a vocation to holiness, as an opportunity to receive and spread God’s limitless love.
In our prayer today, let us remember to pray for the souls of our loved ones who have passed, but also for the poor and the outcast who continue to be among us.
