Do you know what a bearing wall is? St. Paul did. He described it in the Letter to the Ephesians. Christ is our bearing wall, a wall that bears the weight of a house from top to bottom.
During these difficult days of the pandemic, hear these words anew. Amidst the pain and anguish, these words assure us that we belong to Christ and He belongs to us; that He has made himself to be our bearing wall, holding us together close to his heart.
Today we celebrate Thomas, the Apostle, who initially found it difficult to believe in Jesus. When told by the other disciples that they had seen the Lord, Thomas said to them, “unless I see the marks of the nails in his hands, and put my finger into his side, I will not believe.” As it happened, a week later Jesus came to the disciples once again and Thomas was able to touch the nail marks and put his finger in Jesus' side.
Thomas went on to sacrifice his life for Jesus. To call him doubting Thomas is to overlook his loyalty to Jesus during troubled times and his absolute surrender when given the evidence he sought. “My Lord and my God!”
How many of us have expressed our own doubts from time to time? To doubt is human and a common occurrence among we holy members of the household of God. But like Thomas, we have also been known to surrender and give evidence of our loyalty to God.
Ponder the words of St. Paul that speak of us as holy members of the household of God. Ask for a deeper clarity of our union with Him who is our bearing wall. And like St. Thomas, even though we may doubt at times, God’s peace will also come to us.
