Yesterday, Father Fred Jenga, C.S.C., president of Holy Cross Family Ministries, spoke to my colleagues and me about our history and mission. (It was a comprehensive and inspiring address. One that left me reflecting on the past and encouraged me for the present and the future.) Part of Father Fred’s address had to do with how each of us can and is needed to play a role in fulfilling our ministry’s mission to help families pray, with the ultimate review coming when one day we stand before God and give an accounting of how we served Him, our families and all that He put in our lives.

Every day, we all answer questions. Some we can answer quickly and easily without too much thought. Others require careful reflection. Routine questions fill our daily lives. For example, "What should I wear today?"; "What shall we eat tonight?”; and “What are you watching on TV?" These are questions that have no long-term importance. Some questions in life cannot be answered: “Why do men refuse to ask for directions?"; “Why do women open their mouths when putting on eye makeup?” These are questions that not really significant.

Probably at some time, we have all had the experience of being inspired by a speaker’s words. Perhaps their passion, depth of knowledge, insight, or how they expressed some life wisdom touched a chord deep within us. Maybe it occurred to us, “I never thought this way before.” Our way of thinking experienced a conversion.

Today’s healing of the blind man is unique. For it is the only one in the Gospels that takes place as a two-stage process. Which made me wonder, why? Jesus could have restored the man’s sight in one shot, so there had to be a reason; maybe it is to help us understand how God works in our lives, step-by-step, day by day, and not all at once.

Today is my mother’s birthday, and I proudly used to say that she was born on St. Valentine’s Day. And I am sure you hoped to hear me say Happy Valentine’s Day! However, the Church in recent years has changed the liturgical focus of this day from St. Valentine to the great missionaries of the Slavs, Sts. Cyril and Methodius.

Prayer, especially the Rosary, strengthens families to come to know and believe God brings us through every challenge. Coming together as a family to pray during Lent—offering thanksgiving, petition, and intercession for ourselves and others gives new meaning to the season and fosters hope.
