A survey was done recently to find out where people go to find out information about the weather. The daily lives of many people are impacted by the weather.
In the gospel today, Jesus pointed out that if people wanted to know if it was going to rain, they looked to the clouds. Jesus acknowledged their ability to interpret the appearance of the earth and sky, but he also asked how is it that they missed the more important point of what he has been trying to tell them about life!
Jesus is telling us that God is sending us sights and sounds every day but many of us don’t seem to be able to pick up God’s signals.
Right now, our lives are complicated by COVID-19. Everything we plan is like a sandcastle built on the beach. The future is so uncertain.
But St. Paul is sharing with us today ways to help us navigate the storms in our lives during these difficult times. He himself is writing this letter while he is in prison dealing with the storms in his own life but urging us to:
Bear with one another through love
Try to be gentle and patient with others
Strive for unity
Live in a manner worthy of who we are
So who are we? There is a divine image that is imprinted in every human being. Every human person is an image of God. That’s why you hear the Holy Father come to the defense of the migrant, the poor and those who society shuns.
How might we acquire these attributes that St. Paul mentioned today? Affirm those we love and care about, and try to see the imprint of God’s image in others.
And then there is prayer, a simple conversation with Jesus! That is what St. Theresa of Avila called it. Family prayer, the gift that keeps giving and over time reveals those attributes that Paul talked about and that Jesus told us we could find in the here and now. Family prayer will help us interpret the mystery of who we are for one another.
Go to Google if you want to find out about the weather but go to Prayer if we want to live in a manner worthy of the call that we have received.
