The Search for Happiness: Family Reflection Video

Why pray?

We could all learn to be a bit happier. Would you take the happiness class?

Professor Santos of Yale University teaches the happiness class, and advocates three ways to seek happiness. While looking at these tactics, I realized that Jesus and his disciples encourage us to do the same:

  • Increase Gratitude: Jesus often spoke of being grateful. God has given the Earth and all its beauty to humankind! Perhaps you could make a gratitude list every day to give thanks for all your family’s blessings.
  • Take Time for Savoring: In granting us all this beauty, God also intended us to treasure and protect it. He wants us to enjoy and savor the beauty in our lives. Pick something you find pleasure in, like eating your favorite dessert or going on a daily walk, and slow down to really soak it in.
  • Make Social Connections: Love God and love your fellow men and women as yourself. We are social beings, called to be in community with one another. Engaging with other people face-to-face can easily elevate a positive mood!

As you and your family think about your own search for happiness, I encourage you to pray the Our Father together. Take it slow, savor every word and notice how elements of happiness are contained in that prayer.
