“Hear, O Lord, the sound of my call; have pity on me and answer me.” The psalmist today speaks of a longing to connect with God … a longing that I believe many of us seek today.
This longing was something Elijah, the Old Testament prophet, felt as we learn in the first reading today.
The image of Elijah, alone and afraid, in a cave brought to mind images today from across of the world of men, women and children seeking shelter in their homes. People whose hopes and dreams may have been shattered by the coronavirus.
At first Elijah did not recognize God’s presence as he was expecting a dramatic intervention. Instead it was a simple whisper that Elijah would eventually recognize, an assurance that God hears the cry of the poor, the lonely, and those who cower in fear.
If today, you hear his voice … be prepared to hear a whisper.
Other times that voice may be louder, such as in today’s Gospel about matters regarding sexuality and marriage. The imagery reminds the faithful that treating others as objects of pleasure undermines personhood. In other words, with Jesus, we do not just have bodies but our bodies are made in His image and likeness.
We see attributes of God revealed to us today that clearly reveal His concern for each of us. Have you ever experienced God’s whisper? Would you care to share that experience with us, as Elijah shared his?
