I spend a lot of time with the devil I know. A lot of us do. We are stuck in careers, relationships, routines, and ruts that we long to change, but don’t. There is a litany of reasons for this: fear, laziness, uncertainty, and lack of confidence. It boils down to the notion that the devil we know is better than the devil we don’t.

I’m pretty sure this season should be called “the time of finding stray pine needles all over my house until Lent” (or maybe next Advent) instead of just plain old “Ordinary Time.”

A few years ago, I was standing in the checkout line at the grocery store. I had just had my third baby a month earlier, and it was one of my first ventures out into the world on my own with the kids. I don’t remember much about the actual shopping part, but I will never forget what happened while we were waiting to pay for our groceries.

The more children I have, the less I feel I know about parenting. It’s a continual lesson in humility and an ever-increasing giving of self — which makes self-care all the more critical.
