Reflections of Family and Faith
"The family that prays together stays together." - Venerable Patrick Peyton
The request came in on a Monday. I read the email and just kinda sank in my chair, immediately feeling the weight of wanting to say no but knowing I couldn’t — or wouldn’t — or just wasn’t meant to. The youth minister at our parish had reached out to ask if my husband and I would consider speaking to the parents at the upcoming Confirmation classes (which happened to be a short five days away). The topic she asked us to speak on was “the importance of passing on our faith to our children.”

The attitude of each and every parishioner affects the atmosphere of each individual parish. It is not just the priest who sets the tone.

I thought it would be a good time to share one of my most treasured moments praying the Rosary – the night I was privileged to pray with a then-soon-to-be-on-the-path-to sainthood, devout man of God, the Venerable Father Patrick Peyton.

I have had a few of these days. Days that were so scary or sad that I was on the verge of tears the whole day. Those are the days that going out into public is really hard. Those are the days that smiling is really hard. People have no idea what is going on in your life. They say “how was your weekend?” but they really don’t want to know the answer unless it is an uplifting answer.

I have found that two streams can run through one’s life simultaneously — one, a deep current of sadness, the other a bubbling spring of joy. But I admit that I have often found myself overwhelmed by the stream of heartache and have taken for granted the glimpses of joy that can be found on an otherwise dreary day.

I’ve been there. Life is sailing along. Sure, there are some bumps in the road here and there but nothing traumatic. Congratulations, you’re winning at life!
