Reflections of Family and Faith

Four years ago, I had an opportunity to officiate at a wedding in Cartagena, Columbia. A beautiful statue of a great saint stands just outside the Church near the beach. It is there that I learned about this wonderful Saint of the day, Peter Claver. As a Jesuit priest, he went to the missions in Cartegena, Columbia which was then the center of the slave trade.

Most of us have lived through both challenging and peaceful times. And because we've experienced both, we have perspective. But that doesn't mean that we don't feel anxious when we are in the midst of a storm, whether literally like the recent hurricane, Ida, or the U.S. and refugee evacuation from Afghanistan.

In today’s gospel, Matthew tells us we must be prepared to meet the Lord at any time, because we do not know when he is coming. How can we prepare? I came across an article from Our Sunday Observer in which Pope Francis identified ten secrets for being happy and I think they will also help us be prepared to meet the Lord.

When you first look at today’s readings, they don’t seem to have much common ground. The first reading from Exodus is a series of God’s “great deeds,” meant to elicit gratitude from the Israelites, a gratitude that flows from God’s fidelity.

What a blessing! Imagine the blessing of living some thirty years in the same little village as Jesus. Maybe you and He escape the heat of summer as children by wading into the cool refreshing waters of the Sea of Galilee. Or He brings you into the workshop where you watch Joseph plaining a sturdy, sweet-scented, cedar board to be used for a family dining table.

As a child my siblings and I loved to have guests come to our home. We were happy because we knew that a rooster would be prepared, and we would have the best food with special dishes and sweets. A guest coming to our home was like God coming. It was the time we were on our best behavior, especially if the guest was a priest or a nun.
