"The family that prays together stays together." - Venerable Patrick Peyton
Intercessory Prayer | Venerable Patrick Peyton | pray the rosary
In 2013, my oldest son, Ian, and I traveled with the Deaf Apostolate of Boston to Rio de Janeiro for World Youth Day. Just four years earlier, our family had adopted a sweet little girl from China, who is Deaf. This trip offered an opportunity to not only become more acquainted with the Catholic Deaf community but also allowed further instruction in interpreting the Mass in American Sign Language. The most remarkable blessing came from learning the ASL for the Liturgy from Father Shawn Carey, himself Deaf. This alone already brimmed with God's Divine Providence; little did I know, God was only warming up!

Ave Maria Press | Fr. Willy Raymond, C.S.C. | The Family That Prays Together Stays Together | Venerable Patrick Peyton | praying the Rosary
Most weekdays, I pray a decade of the Rosary with my children as I drive them to school. In our routine, this practice comes after a shared morning offering, guardian angel prayer, spiritual communion if the kids don’t have Mass at school that day, and prayer to St. Michael the Archangel. Some days, it’s a quiet and peaceful experience. Other times, it comes after a rush to get out the door and a frustrating cajoling to get whoever hasn’t led a decade that week to either take his turn or speak up from the back of the car.

As a newish Catholic, I wish The Family That Prays Together Stays Together had been published about two years sooner, because it would have made learning the Rosary a bit easier for my entire family!

Family Activities | Saint Patrick | Venerable Patrick Peyton | family prayer
I have to tell you; there was quite a competition about who would have the honor of celebrating the Mass at the Father Peyton Center last year on St. Patrick’s Day. It was only settled by a DNA test showing I had the closest connection to Saint Patrick, but not how you might think.

Venerable Patrick Peyton | family prayer | rosary novena
The annual Family Novena Celebrating Venerable Patrick Peyton’s Birth began on January 9, and continues each day through January 17. There could be no better way for you and your family to start the New Year — asking Father Peyton and Our Blessed Mother to pray with you and for you from heaven for your needs and concerns. The Church refers to this as “intercession” … like asking a friend here on earth to pray with you and for you. When Father Peyton encouraged the world with his message, “The Family That Prays Together Stays Together,” he was zealous about it! He was sure praying together, especially the Rosary, would make a tremendous difference in homes. Families are facing so many challenges today; we need family prayer more than ever. Perhaps healing our families can help heal a community, then a country, and eventually the world. Just discovering this Rosary Novena? Start on Day One at any time of the year!

Venerable Patrick Peyton | family prayer | rosary novena
The annual Family Novena Celebrating Venerable Patrick Peyton’s Birth, January 9–17, is your opportunity to seek Father Peyton and Our Blessed Mother’s intercession for your family’s needs in 2024. Father Peyton was our ministry’s founder and is now a candidate for sainthood. His ministry continued after he went home to God in 1992 because his work was not done. We still need to encourage families as he did. Father Peyton devoted his priesthood to the spiritual well-being of families and became their prayer partner — praying with them and for them. We believe he is still doing that from heaven. Talk to your family about the Novena and start praying it at any time; we've included the link to Day One at the bottom of this post. Pray for your family and pray for Venerable Patrick Peyton’s eventual canonization so he can inspire future generations by being declared the “Saint for Family Prayer.” He’s halfway through the 4-step process now and your prayers can help.
