Reflections of Family and Faith
"The family that prays together stays together." - Venerable Patrick Peyton
Holy lives of inspiration | Learn more about our faith
One of the things that characterized Jesus' life was that he was about searching and saving lives. As we celebrate Mass today, we will discover that Saints Peter and Paul were also about searching and saving lives, as did Saint Rose Duchesne. Hopefully, in some small measure, we followers of Jesus seek to do the same. We heard the remarkable story of the encounter Jesus had with a man named Zacchaeus, who was small in stature, and climbed a tree to catch a glimpse of Jesus as he passed by. We were told that he was a tax collector, which meant he probably did not have too many friends among his acquaintances. However, what we needed to note was the sacrifice Zacchaeus made in climbing that tree. He was a professional and had a significant employment. He had to have been well-known, and yet here he was, willing to risk his professional standing, submit to ridicule from those who knew him.

Learn more about our faith | Why pray?
I have been listening to a Bible study program both for its content and the fact that it is broadcast from Brazil. Someone asked if Jesus wrote any of the books of the Bible. While He may not have physically written any, we do believe that He inspired every word that others wrote, as revealed to us in 2 Timothy 3:16. Did Jesus pray, and how did He pray? The Scriptures often mention that He prayed in response to particular needs and at specific locations; however, not much is said about the content of His prayer. Today, however, we heard Him not only praying but also what He said as He prayed.

Return to the Church | Why pray?
As it was in the days of Noah, so it will be in the days of the Son of Man. What happened in the days of Noah? We heard Jesus describe several destructive occurrences in the Old Testament that led to devastating and unanticipated death. But similar happenings also occurred in the time of the Son of Man.

Love thy Neighbor | Return to the Church
In the Scriptures today we are presented with diverse personalities. St. Paul is inviting people to make a choice and he suggests that they consider modeling themselves on what they observed in him and his followers. In the gospel, Jesus tells us about a person who is quite clever and manages to save his skin by cooking the books.

I have come to enjoy watching a program on National Public Television called Finding Your Roots. Each week the program explores fascinating ancestries and family mysteries of notable guests. Guests are introduced to ancestors that go back generations and, in some instances, the ancestors are from a notable blood line.
