Reflections of Family and Faith
"The family that prays together stays together." - Venerable Patrick Peyton
In the midst of a political upheaval in our own country, with a few leaders on the world stage that are acting like bullies, there are some timely words that God has for us in these Scripture readings today. He addressed both in the readings we heard at mass today. To the political bullies and to those who have no need of God since money has become their god, the psalm response from the Book of Deuteronomy had a reminder for both, “It is I who deal death and give life."

It was the Alleluia antiphon that stayed with me as I sat in the chapel seeking inspiration for the Scripture readings today. “Let your countenance shine upon your servant and teach me your statues.” In other words, let your face be seen by me and teach me. The prophet Ezekiel was so blessed. God used him to let a rebellious people know that their rebellion was about to end in captivity and exile.

No winner yesterday for the lottery here in the USA, which is now worth one billion dollars, however we did score a win today with the two Scripture readings read at mass today.

Once again Jesus is challenged and asked to defend Himself, to give proof to substantiate His teachings, His preaching. He gave them signs, and mind you these were gentiles, not even people who shared His religious beliefs. And we, if asked to give signs that would help others understand who God is for us, what would we say?

“Put your house in order for you are about to die.” Those words from the prophet Isaiah reminded me of relatives and friends who may also have been told those words. I can only imagine what their reaction might have been.

I attended a picnic recently and felt I could have been among the walking dead. I do not say this to disparage anyone. It had been several years since I last saw some of the attendees and people who I once knew to be vibrant were now wrinkled and some bent over. They did not appear to be people like the ones Isaiah described today, people with hearts that trembled as trees of the forest tremble in the wind. At one point, I had to ask myself to what extent had my own appearance changed.
