We are one body, the body of Christ. St. Paul voiced this article of faith for us today in his letter to the Philippians, but it is the voice and music of the Irish vocalist that rings in my ears, "We Are One Body, the Body of Christ." If my memory serves me, I believe this song was popularized at one of the World Youth Days.

Jesus went up a mountain and there he stayed the night praying to God. I couldn’t even begin to imagine what this could have been like. Were any words exchanged? Maybe none were needed.

Put out in the deep waters and lower your nets for a catch. When Jesus told Peter to do this, Peter more or less answered Jesus, saying, “been there, done that.” Peter basically told Jesus that he had tried that before, but it didn’t work. It seems to me that Peter quickly regretted his response and said something like, “well ok, I’ll give it another try.” He gave it another try, and we saw what happened. Peter was taken aback by the number of fish he caught.

Recently I read about a professor who offered what she found to be helpful habits in building up her students. She was quick to affirm them, tell them they are a gift and have a gift to give to others. Students would often tell her that no one ever said that to them and in response, she simply said, “Well, no one may have been listening very close to you.”

In the midst of a political upheaval in our own country, with a few leaders on the world stage that are acting like bullies, there are some timely words that God has for us in these Scripture readings today. He addressed both in the readings we heard at mass today. To the political bullies and to those who have no need of God since money has become their god, the psalm response from the Book of Deuteronomy had a reminder for both, “It is I who deal death and give life."

It was the Alleluia antiphon that stayed with me as I sat in the chapel seeking inspiration for the Scripture readings today. “Let your countenance shine upon your servant and teach me your statues.” In other words, let your face be seen by me and teach me. The prophet Ezekiel was so blessed. God used him to let a rebellious people know that their rebellion was about to end in captivity and exile.
